Following the 3:1 against FC Lausanne-Sport, on Sunday the 29th of April 2012, FC Basel claimed the title earlier than any other team ever has, under the existing league format. Upon reaching 65 points, Heiko Vogel’s team can no longer be caught by any other Super League team, or by any court cases or judges decisions (FC Luzern & FC Sion). FC Basel can now celebrate their first ever league title hat-trick, since their formation in 1893. With three games still to play before the end of the season, the 2011/2012 season will go down in history as one of the strongest FC Basel seasons of all time.
On Tuesday the 13th of March 2012, FC Basel proved to be chanceless in their 2nd leg match against Bayern Munich in the Allianz Arena. Basel failed to qualify for the quarter final of the Champions League, losing to Bayern Munich by 0:7 (0:3). Bayern presented an extremely strong side, leaving Basel virtually with no chances. Robben (2), Müller, and Gomez (4) scored the goals for the dominant German team. Despite the severity of the score line against one of Europe’s strongest teams, it is important not to underestimate the tremendous efforts and results which FC Base has achieved in the 2011/2012 Champions League campaign.
The fairytale continues! FC Basel 1893 beat FC Bayern Munich 1:0 (0:0) on home soil after a sensational performance at St. Jakob-Park on Wednesday night. At this stage of the competition Basel are amongst the top 16 teams in Europe. This latest success is due to a focused team performance and individual expertise by Basel keeper Yann Sommer (eliminating several Bayern chances). Substitute Valentin Stocker who stepped onto the pitch during the last phase of the game scored late in the game after a precise pass by team mate Jacques Zoua. This is a historic victory for FC Basel, creating a positive build up for the return leg in Munich on the 13th of March 2012
